stranger thingsOk, so I Saw HC at Sale in April and I noticed a slight shift in his response to The Question. Instead of the usual 'I'll never rejoin the Strangs', it was 'how can I rejoin a band who haven't split up?' and, (in a moment of consideration for others), 'how would the Paul & Baz feel if I came back in?'. He then listed the many positive qualities of JJ, Dave and Jet.
Next, like many others, I noticed the PR 'erm, yes', response to the 'would you put the Strangs on the backburner if Soulsec took off?' online question the other week.
So now PR is gone. When Baz was announced as vocalist on his site he mentioned that they were taking it 'a step at a time'... HC is using the Strangs font in his logo again... and in July, they'll all be on the same stage in Guidlford (with a 24 hour time gap), right back where it all started.
Hmmm.
How many bands have got back together after Spinal Tap scale fallouts? Loads. A reunion is not that unlikely when you think about it - stranger things have happened.

A reunion is not that unlikely - I`ve seen many bands live that I never thought I would see again. Pixies being the best example - Frank Black was still dragging out the "not over my dead body" about a day before the official "yes we`ve reformed" statement.
However, what would be the point of the band reforming. Sure I guess a 1 off gig would be interesting and I`d probably be there like a shot. But what would be the point of anything else?

stranger things#2Yesss, the even bigger question - what's the point of a reunion?
I think that most fans can see that there is unfinished business with the original line up - personally and musically- and I think there's probably another album in them somewhere. Perhaps 10 wasn't the best way for them to go out? I am a fan of HC's & JJ's solo work and loved Norfolk Coast, but I don't think that precludes the original lineup working together again. Indeed it might give wider exposure to what HC has been doing.
What else? I think a new album & reunion tour would give the boys a deserved big pay day for all their work and I also think they are waaaay under-recognised for their contribution to music, so maybe the Music Industry could see its way to giving a lifetime achievement award?
I also think it would be pretty healthy all round if four intelligent adult men could sit round a table and see if they could give it another try. I always thought that The Stranglers were the one band who could rise above petty internal bickering.
I'm sure there are other reasons, but I'm supposed to be working so I'd better stop for now.

They SHOULD invite him to play but they won't.
As far as a studio reunion, I think Hugh would only need to hear Jet say, "Great idea, I'll just go and get my new drum machine and we'll get started...in a week". Then it would be "See ya, I was right the first time".
I can't really see a proper reunion happening, but then I never thought Roberts would ever go. If they got offered enough money now, who knows?

All the original members, back where it all began?
Any other band and I wouldn't be the least surprised,
but we're talking the Strangs & Hugh here, if they did it
I'd probly shit my weight in Guinness.
Still, I nearly did that when I realised it was true about PR.
Love to see it happen, can't see why it shouldn't, at least for a one off,
but think it'll never happen.
Too many people remembering exactly what happened to Lott's wife I'm afraid.

This is my old chestnut this one..... the drum issue would kill it.... same old, same old sound. Its all very well JJ saying Jet uses computers and real drums, that's fair comment but that's prolly to illustrate he uses computers in the studio and real drums live. Whether he actually uses all real drum "sounds" live nowadays is open to debate anyway. The Cymbals are prolly still live the rest on triggers??? It's a long time since we heard Jet behind the kit in the studio, except Laid Black where the drums sounded live and refreshing.
A return of Hugh would have to be a return to real drums IMO. Get them back in the mix like the early days, it was part of the classic Stranglers sound. I love all the drum mixes Rattus to MIB, on the whole they occupy more of the background, it allowed JJ's Bass to sit where it did. There's just been a fight going on since and Norfolk Coast album being the worst example. Whatever happened to dynamics. Jets a jazzer at heart and it used to show on the early stuff. This is such big subject and a bone of mine for years, so for now I'll just say "BASS DRUM SOUND get out of my fucking face it don't have to be like that..........

Reunion??
Paul roberts left!
HC and the Stranglers both releasing albums this year filled with Stranglers classics!!
Bah! The only way there'd be a reunion was if there was a major anniversary, say maybe a 30th, of an iconic seminal first album coming up.
You know. Like a one off date next year , say somewhere like Finsbury Park [Anyone remember the Damneds 2 night 5th Anniversary Tea-party there?] The Stranglers with Hugh, performing Rattus in its entirity.
Surely Not??

Well, imho, I don't think The Stranglers or Hugh are going to get any bigger than they are now.
They've both been plodding along for years now and the best The Stranglers can hope for is a sell-out SBE show once a year while Hugh gigs constantly at any shit-hole that will have him. Both parties, more than ever are just trying to remind people of the old Stranglers days with their books, greatest hits packages, punk festival slots etc. What's the fucking point? They're all going nowhere because, on the whole, people don't give a shit unless they are seeing/hearing the real deal.
Most music fans aren't arsed about solo careers or bands who don't have their original singers etc...we all know this! We, as fans of Hugh and/or The Stranglers have persevered with this situation for nearly 16 years. Do WE want to fade away into obscurity as our ageing (like us!) heroes gradually fade away from the music scene altogether? Or do we want to go out in style with something to really shout about?
Back to HC & The Stranglers though...
As content and happy as they proclaim to be with their respective careers I still reckon they'd enjoy one last crack at the 'big time', headling major events and playing to massive audiences. Nevermind all the media interest.
Paul Roberts is gone. The Stranglers want to be like they used to be. Hugh wants to sing Stranglers songs. And they all want to sell records & concert tickets!
So, where's the fucking problem?
My proposal then:
Hugh rejoins The Stranglers (SuiteXI is binned) and they all promote the latest 'Greatest Hits' album ...milk it to death...makes loads of money...receive awards..Brits appearances..Rock 'n'roll' Hall Of Fame etc....(Baz could take up a JE-type role circa '10' Tour possibly)
THEN...they all retire for good! And put The Stranglers ghost to rest once and for all. At the same time we all fuck off home!
Well?

If the stranglers are to reborn, I can't see it possible if money reasons lead the move. Except if they can't endure each other so deeply they would tickle one's lightness and/or shake the tree for the riped fruits to land.
Then creative tensions could make it soar and roll !
Just to beat the other one.
With a sound recovering its time, raw and neat.
And if they could find themselves in the "Nothing to loose" state -apart from family&friends- they could tell it more than ever.
As new as they wanted it at the beginning.
Well big thing would be coming... Fresh and experienced at the same time.
If Guilfest won't be conclusive then wonder if there's magic left in the meninblack's slide

I think that I wouldn't be the only one on here that would just like to see some closure here (fuck that sounds vilely american - sorry!).
If the band were to play a gig, probably coinciding with a significant milestone date, then I think it would be fantastic to see Hugh make a guest appearance for a few tracks, in much the same way as Sensible appeared with the Damned in 86 (only I was there for the Saturday rather than the Sunday so I missed him!).
If something like that came off then we could all move on. And I'm sure that some manner of reconcilliation could only benefit both camps, at least financially if nothing else. Everyone fanwise would be happy.... those people who never saw the band with Hugh (and I think that there are many on this forum) would love to see it I'm sure... conversely those people that were gutted with the split in 1990 would love to see an end to the acrimony. Realistically most of us are aware and accepting of the fact that Mk I is not a viable long term prospect (being honest Mk IV isn't exactly likely to go on for more than a couple of years!) but imagine just for one night... in a celebration of all things Stranglers... for 20 minutes, I need no more.... Hugh on the same stage as JJ, Jet and Dave.... wonderful, fuckin' wonderful!
Now as I dry my eyes, I'm going to the fridge to get another beer!

Deep down I really do think they will play again together one day. Maybe it's my love of The Stranglers and their music that makes me a bit over-optimistic. Within the members of the band, putting all bad feeling aside I think they would like to reform.
There must be times when the band miss HC's input / live performances and likewise HC must miss the band the same.

On the whole of it Jet & Dave have not said a lot about Hugh's departure, in fact I cannot recall them ever saying anything of interest - correct me if i'm wrong please. Both JJ and Hugh have said a lot but then I think they've played their cards very close to their chests and never really given the full facts - if any. Maybe the whole thing has been blown well out of proportion.
All four orignal members still perform the original stuff whilst both parties have 'moved on' and created new material.
