Which Version of Strange Little Girl do you prefer?

Following on from POTS, what do we make of this then?

The best version I have ever heard is the boot version of theMarch 21st 1990 @ Brixton, It is just something about the guitar solo in the middle very clear.

Funny thing about this song was as Dave played the intro Hugh seemed to be finger pointing at Dave as he seemed annoyed about something, maybe it was because Hugh fucked up the solo in the previous song Always the Sun.
I can clearly remember the incident can anyone else?

I prefer The RTL2 version http://www.rtl2.fr/prs/sessions.asp?dicid=39388

Bit of a purist, 1982 version for me m'fraid.
Olympic Smile

I usually prefer the live versions myself as they are always different..............I remember the fucked up one at Chippenham Golddiggers on the Feline tour well. ( There is a cagey bootleg somewhere), but JJ, Jet and Hugh seemed to have an "Instrument playoff" exchange between 'em.............Dunno the script tho', never seen any mention of a tiff between the guys???..............unless anyone knows different?

82 !

I'm with Jim - the all Live version is best "Here's another of our heavy meta classics.."

"All this stuff about child abuse, when I was a child I had to abuse myself..."

Is it just me or does the Laid Black version sound dangerously like the old Emmerdale Farm theme tune?

Was it on the Dreamtime tour that they started the song with JJ doing echo bass on the opening note (think it's D) and then Dave came in a few bars later ? Loved that beginning !

Jim - it was 85 - I'm sure of it.

Normally not less than four to six echo beats and then in came Dave.

deffo '85 - remember JJ's bass echoing around the Dominion on the Aural Sculpture tour

Sticking to the original question it has to be the single version for me ........but there are some excellent live versions around.

It's one Stranglers song I never liked, I don't know if I subconciously linked it with a worry at the time that gigs were gonna be taken over by screaming girls with silk stranglers scarves (Cornball at that time seemed to be modelling himself on David Hasselhoff) but it just fookin grates on me, time for a pint if it's played live.

.........I dont like Always the Sun either Crying or Very sad

I prefer the demo version, because this shows how the Stranglers originally intended this song to sound. However, when the officially released this song as a "two-fingers" to EMI in 1982, I couldn't help admire their style!

But Mitch, the fact that the screaming-girls-silk-scarves thing thankfully didn't materialise, perhaps you could revisit SLG & re-evaluate. It's class. The 1982 version for me.

Always the Sun live is a 'pint' song for me, too.

'82 for me, even though I wrote off my parents car the day after I bought the single and taped it to play on the cassette player in the car...
Skin Deep

1982 single for me also. It's just perfect.

Reminds me of my dim and distant youth. Crying or Very sad
firebirdV8

I prefer that zurich 85 one,,with the bass intro,excellent!
PjInBlack

single definately
andyinblack1

the original single version for me. i'm also quite partial to the laidblack version as well Shocked
wadey1

original. easy. i also like a version i have of hugh at borders in york, thats ace too.
theraven1979

Gotta go with the Bass intro but if I was there when the original came out I'd probably be going with that

That Zurich version does sound the mutts nuts though doesn't it? Really gets the hair on the back of yer neck.

I borrowed a cassette bootleg of this gig off an old mate (Raj) which he bought at Camden Lock Market years ago.

If I remember rightly and apologies for going off thread ever so slightly, is this not the gig which has probably the best bass echo seque between Midnight Summer Dream and European Female ?

Each to his/her own taste, but JJ plays an absolute blinder on this between the two songs.

Didn't go the gig myself but the cassette recording was superb.

Gizz- did you go to this gig ?
LAFOLIE

My wife's best Stranglers track !
ThruBeingCool

One of those records like 'Thrown Away' which really can't be done live without sounding..er different.

I love the original single version, not only for very personal reasons but also because of the general mood/feeling/vibe of the song, whch is lost on the live versions. The video (which I also love) almost comes close to replicating this atmosphere.

'SLG' -Best left as a studio cut imho Cool
theraven1979

The studio version has always sounded really delicate though ain't it? I guess that's for the best? Plus Hugh's vocals are really upfront. Visconti?

Yes!

Nowt wrong with the live versions btw. Just that the original studio recording works on another level.

I still stick with my opinion of 2 years ago.
Anyone else remember Hughs reaction?
