What's your thought on the Olympic games - China.

Now the games have officially opened in China. What are your thoughts about China hosting the games, human rights and the smog?
The Strangler

I'm not that bothered about where it is etc, I just think the Olympics is a pile of shit.
Hammer

I think opening up China to the world has to be a good thing, people are becoming more aware to the situation in Tibet, Taiwan & mainland China itself.
I've just watched some of the opening ceremony and London has its' work cut out to match that in 4 years time.

I can just imaging the conversations now going on amongst the British Olympic Contingent?

"So Chas and Dave won't be the finale then?"
Andrew

I've no interest in Politics and even less interested in Sport but that opening ceremony was amazing!
Arthur Streeb-Greebling

Indeed, watched the opening ceremony too this afternoon, it was absolutely incredible.

Amazing opening ceremony! Got me thinking about what the UK will pull out the bag come 2012.... Vicky Pollard jumping out of a giant doner kebab whilst a troupe of chavs dance to the sounds of Paul McCartney (he's bound to get in somewhere right?) wobbling his smug chevy chase all over the stadium widescreen which will suffer intermitent failure due to the wiring not being correct thanks to the building work on the olympic village not being completed on time ergo causing disruption to essential services (the flame will go out more than once and electric floodlight failure a distinct possibility) and ultimately postponement on the first day courtesy of an UXB by Al Qaeda and a tube train drivers strike?

Either that or it will piss down for 4 weeks.

Fantastic opening, can't wait for watching football on my TV. Smile

Cracking opening!
Horsepower

I never bother watching it til the athletics start. The table tennis and badminton is usually good though.

Just watching the opening ceremony via the red button and my god that's how you do an opening ceremony!! None of this obscure European clowns on stilts bollocks.

Can't say I'm ever that bothered about the Olympics, I'm just glad the new football season's starting.

I'm sure Forest will find new and creative ways of annoying the hell out of me once more.

Haven't fully seen the opening ceremony, but damn, Chinese people sure are good at such stuff. I can't wait for the basketball matches.

Watched some of the opening ceremony lunch time yesterday on big screen at Trafalgar Square. We have absolutely no chance of matching it. Think we should just withdraw our bid now, or at least those of us with any self respect should make sure we are out of the country in four years time!
Cola Can

I'm sure I'll watch some of it - particularly the athletics which is the real Olympics for me. As for human rights? well we just shoot innocent people on the tube, allow our nationals to be held prisoner without trial for years and years, allow democracy to be eroded away, have a clown as London Mayor, a fat ugly incompetant twat as prime minster who fucked us by the tax system and is impotent in the face of big banks, who now have realised they've not understood what the result of their greed would be and are just trying to find another way to blames us and penalise us for their cock up.

oh and look...everything I have in my house was made in China.....

Oh really all this negativity concerning our own forthcoming opening ceremony is too much! I have every confidence that we are more than capable of putting on a show to shame Johnny Foreigner.
I visualise a spirited display of morris dancing followed by the massed bands of the St. Johns ambulance brigade, then an exciting circuit by a lorry trailer swathed in bunting and carrying all the remaining cast members of Dr. Who since 1961 all of whom will have bags of Werthers Originals to throw to the children. Then a dance routine featuring BBC newsreaders dressed as the cast of "Chariots Of Fire", with the whole thing rounded off by a raffle to win a box of organic spring onions grown by the Islington single parent ethnic lesbian inner city farm project.

The best of British! thats the spirit.

(I think the Chinese perhaps overdid it a bit with the fireworks. The way they carry on you'd think they had invented them or something Rolling Eyes )

Giles Smith has a column in The Times on saturday and his headline was 'Harmony between man and nature' a tough act to follow for Chas & Dave.

Do you have another career Toiler? Smile

Tell what I'm most disappointed about- I was sat in the ferry back home on Saturday and I noticed on the tele they were showing what looked like a cool animated cartoon of Monkey, drawn, by the looks of it, by Jamie Hewitt of Tank Girl/gorillaz fame. Great I thought- can't wait to see that, then fucked off I was when I realised it was only an advert for the bloody Olympics, like.
There won't be a bigger/better chance for China's appalling human rights record and their treatment of the Tibetans to be showcased to the world, but as usual I don't reckon it'll make much difference in the long run.

Reminded me of a Tom Waits line about Astronauts returning from the Moon reporting that it smells of fireworks - Cue incredulous look, "Of course it does- that's where they all go!" Laughing

I think it's part of an album by Damon Albarn called Monkey which is out next week.
