What is the one truly iconic anthem?listening to the greatest hits today and really 3 songs stand out. But if we are to pick one that really represents the Stranglers in all their glory, which is it to be? Or do you think it should be somehting else..I'm thinking singles...if you can remember that far back..

My vote, if I were to pick out the three, would be NMH. Even the knob jockeys of this world who know nothing about music know that this is The Stranglers when that track is played. Its has the Stranglers signiture sound on it and is overflowing with energy.
However what about GB, as it seems to be played the most on radio?

Of the three songs listed by Lord CC, it is Something Better Change.
Prolly coz Dave's intro still............does something to me, like.

Have to go with NMH based upon the reasons above - iconic for Stranglers and non-Stranglers fans alike (Ohh, and knob jockeys ! )

It's not there!
It surely has to be 5 MINUTES

Well, popularity says NMH, but personally GB, it was the track that got me into The Stranglers - Actually saying that Keith Floyd got me heavily into the back catalogue by having Peaches/MIB as well.

All truly great tracks - each one stands out in it's own way.
As we have been asked to make a choice then i would have to go for NMH.As soon as i hear the opening thunder of JJ's bass the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
If however the question had been about the track that the Stranglers are most known for, then i think that it would be Golden Brown.

Fuck me that's good stuff
Also when I hear the last great crescendo of Sewer
This music is just fucking excellent - I have never known a band to be so diverse, yet so popular.
On many other festival webs sites, there's great excitement when The Stranglers is mentioned and many people saying they defo have to go and see them again. It's weird because all the other bands I have loved over the last 43 years none has ever come so close

Totally agree.
The Stranglers always have been my favourite band.I have loved many other bands over the years but they don't give me the same buzz. The Damned would probably be closest and they are still a long way off.

As a statement and anthem of the time it has to be Something better Change.

Out of the 3 on offer, Heroes for sheer 'recognisability' (sp????) for people unfamiliar with the back catalogue. Peaches from a personal perspective.
The real 'anthems' however, (for Stranglers officianado's...... , well for me anyway), are Sewer, Toiler, The Raven and dare I say it ........... Relentless????

Another good point.
Stranglers Anthems- there's a fair few of them.

Never mind the Greatest Hits tour, can you imagine The Anthems tour ?

Gotta be 'Heroes'
Last song of every set for so many years. For people who actually turn out for gigs this song is the most "iconic".
Suppose if we're talking about the general public then it will always be 'Golden Brown'.
'Peaches'somewhere inbetween the 2 imho.

Prompted by Yellercake, and Pidge's bass school I've been listening to a couple of versions of Toiler tonight, but you'd never get them playing it on a Greatest Hits tour though will you? Or, going by the latest poll, Sewer.
Damn shame.
And you never brought a coat with you, Lohan.

A Greatest Hits tour is slightly disappointing I must admit.
I remember being in a pub in Buxton only a few weeks ago listening to a cd of The Stranglers biggest hits. It was a bitter cold night and I was reluctant to leave the warm, lovely atmosphere of this boozer.
HOWEVER!
An hour or so later I walked into an Opera House across the road to listen to almost the same bunch of songs. For nearly £30. And it wasn't even the same miserable git singing most of the songs!

Heroes - used to great effect on All Live with that bass run with the crowd intro fade in.

Peaches for me - I remember when I first heard it on Capital R, who played it constantly; it blew me away then and I've been Stranglers-crazy ever since. It also showcases the band's humour, an integral part of their appeal, something which the other 2 options don't, along with a sneer of a vocal. Being 13 when it was released, I didn't get all of the references, but somehow felt I understood all the same.
If we are talking about the general public, I think that probably NMH is the track that has come to represent early-period Strangs.

In Poland the most popular is 'Golden Brown', not Heroes and Peaches
additionally It was first(excluding Always The Sun) Stranglers song I've heard
So for me It's 'Golden Brown'

Exactly the same for me. From a French point of view, European Female and Always the sun would be the songs which represent the Stranglers at their peak !!!
