Best track on Suite 16OK guys now everyone is tucking into their oh so suite new album I thought I would get early impressions.
So what is the best track then on first few hearings?
|

Aah. It seems you can only put ten tracks into a poll (I did write Relentless but it didn't add for some reason).
This is a bit of a problem as Relentless IS my favourite track.
We will just ahve to count the votes here!

Love the keyboards in 'A Soldier's Diary'. Very 1973 Prog. Rock. Superb.

The intro of Unbroken is awesome and we've got here some great JJ/Baz duo regarding vocals.

The whole album!
Bless You and Relentless for me but as a whole it really is a superb album and just gets better and better.
I've been lucky enough to have a copy for quite a while and it does get better with each hearing and you hear so much more.
Dave's keyboard work on this album is I'd say his best ever.

Dunno yet, I'll let you know when I actually get my copy next week!!
HMV Canada appears to order from HMV UK, then sends the little package to me, so it's about an extra 10 days ( but cheaper somehow?)
Oh well, nowt I can do aboot it!!

I wouldn't know. Those cnuts @ HMV haven't delivered it yet!!!
Should have heeded the alarm bells from you lot on here regarding the late delivery of SOL. But, the last time I used HMV, for when you simply have to have an album on the day of release, (Norfolk Coast), it arrived on the day , no problem.
I fear I'm destined to be the last MiB to get a listen to Relentless. Heard most of the other tracks in different guises but have been purposely avoiding Relentless thanks to the general concesus of it being the 'stand-out' tune. Sort of wanted it to blow me away on Monday September 18th.
Posty had better wake me up tomorrow with, "Ere mate, this'un won't fit thru' your letter box!"

Happily, for me anyway, it didn't. What's that 60's spy theme intro you can hear- just me playing Relentless again pal!

I was gonna say 'Summat Outanow' but I think Ive changed my mind.
'The Spectre of Love' is a real 'Feely good' uplifting type of song, it gives me a buzz and makes me feel good, I love songs like that.

I'll go for She's Slipping away just now, but that is bound to change as I've only played the album twice! Was such a buildup to Relentless that first time round I wasn't sure - maybe not quite what I was expecting. Have just heard for the second time, and it's started to infect me

Indeed man, I love the vocal harmonies on that song... it's a return to Baz's "fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire"-ness from "Into The Fire"!

Feed me a titbit anyone? I've heard it's a bit John Barry'esque'?(he also did the music for the Harmony HairSpray adverts in the 70's.The B side to the Persuaders theme, as memory recalls, which currently resides damply in the loft!). Anything like The Saint or The Persuaders?

astonished Barbara isn't get a look in. This is the album's "sleeper" track, the one you'll want to hear first in four months time when the rest becomes over-familiar. It's a real grower, slow to reveal its charms and in its own way every bit as sophisticated as Relentless.
heed my words..

Nick - that is excellent news and please send best wishes to your daughter ! And I hope she enjoys Bournemouth.
Am taking my two kids to SBE. It will be my son's second gig (he is 9) and is MAD about the band. It will be my daughter's first outinginblack. She is 11.
Might have the opportunity for a few days down in Swanage before the end of the year. Will let you know. Perhaps we can meet up and get mullered.

Whilst I rate Relentless, I can understand why it is not the obvious choice for a single release - but reading comments and looking at the poll, why did Radio 2 choose 'Spectre' as the debut release???
They are just not 'down' with the 30-40 year old kids!!

Relentless
She's Slipping Away

Classic black comedy Stranglers, very much in the same vein as Old Codger & Peaches.

I voted for Summat, simply because Relentless isn't listed. In order of preference, my choice would be:
Relentless
Summat Outanowt
Unbroken
Barbara
Anything Can Happen
She's Slipping Away
Spectre of Love
A Soldier's Diary
I Hate You
Bless You
See Me Coming
Although to be honest, apart from Relentless being the top track and See Me Coming being the bottom, the order of the other excellent songs changes each time I play the album! It's a superb return to form!

Summat's my choice. It actually sounds like the Stranglers back when they were in top form.
After that....
Spectre
Relentless
Unbroken (would be no. 1 or 2 if the lyrics were a bit better)
Barbara
Hate you
Anything
Slipping
Bless you
Soldier
See me coming
Hard to hammer it out precisely, I still like most of the ones toward the bottom.

Still think that Suite XVI isn't as good as NC. The writing is a bit unadventurous in places. However it's still a fine album.
Unbroken - Still my favourite track.
Spectre - has its critics, but I think it sounds like a proper Stranglers song
She's slipping away - I think it's over-rated, a bit AOR (if anyone remembers that term). Verse is good, but chorus is bland.
Summat - my 2nd fave, it gets away with lack of melody in the verse due to the chorus (plus it has the bonus of a JJ solo)
Anything can Happen - liked a lot at first (better than the comparitive Dutch Moon on NC) but I'm losing interest - rules rhyming with fools is too cliched a lyric)
See me Coming - I think this is better than most give it credit, although I agree the E-D-M-O-N-D bit doesn't wotk out of context.
Bless You - has grown on me. A fine song, but the Mark Knoffler guitars at the end are lame, the song needed a stronger finish.
Soldiers Diary - Excellent stuff - sod these slow/quiet songs!
Barbara - in similar style to Slipping Away but much better. Stronger chorus. Rubbish title though.
I Hate You. - OK for a laugh. Thought it would be quickly tiresome, but I still enjoy it. I thought it went down best of the new tracks at Glasgow ABC.
Relentless- Good track, but over-rated. The bridge section is great (Particularly DG's keyboards, which were lost live) but the chorus isn't as strong.
All in all, a good album but I think NC had more punch. It maybe tries to cover too many styles?
Still, I hope they bring more tracks (eg Soldiers Diary) into the live set for the French tour!
