Best solo albums 1979

Nosferatu wins it for me as it was influential on future stranglers material Euroman cometh less so but both were before their time musically..
Alias

Yup, went for the 'feratu too.
PaulinLondon

Euroman for me. Still listen to it very regularly.
Ian9331

Euroman for me too. Played it a 1000 times more than Nosferatu.
theraven1979

Impossible to answer - both really good albums. I was listening to "Big Bug" the other day in the car and I love how Hugh has double vocals on that and one of them is screaming in the background. Of course JJ's Eurohomme is ground breaking as well - I can't decide.

Jim
MULLY

Euroman by a euromile (should that be a kilometre? Embarassed )
mccardigan

Euroman gets it for me as I instantly fell in love with it wheras Nosferatu has grown on me over the years. However it is a testimony to Nos that 16 years after buying it I have grown to love it! For you oldies it must have been great hearing the inventiveness of these two lps. Or did you feel left down?
gizzard

This is a tough one as both are great albums.

Played Nosferatu for the first time for yonks last week and it was excellent as I remember.
Easily Hugh's best solo LP.
Andrew

Euroman by a whisker, but both are superb.

let down.

Neither came anywhere to The Stranglers out-put at that time. Prefer 'Euroman' but still give 'Nosferatu' an occassional spin.
wanderlust

Both are really underrated pieces of post punk rock NOSFERATU was a possible influence on some of the gothic bands of the 80's and along with Post-punk Damned and Banshees paved the way for the emergence of bands like JOY DIVISION and others..EUROMAN may have sounded wacky at the time but it has aged quite well considering the period it was recorded in. I think these two albums would have taken off if Hugh and JJ had more time to promote them between stranglers tours and albums which wasn't possible. JJ got as far as the ill fated tour and Hugh didnt get the chance to air any of this material til the mid 90's..
Cola Can

NOSFERATU! the opening track alone deserves a medal.

Bloody 'ell ! I agree with that man !

Voted for Nosferatu in order to make it a tie at this point.

Paul
Jon the Impaler

Both are fine albums , very different to each other and different again to The Stranglers , though I think there is more Stranglers influence in Hugh's effort . For me Nosferatu just edges it . I like White Room - Hugh did a good job with that one . Shame that both albums didn't sell better .
serya

This is brutal, both are as good as any Stranglers album I think. Nosferatu got more spins on my turntable, though.
F41NXS

cant really say about the albums both about the same

Euroman was the best gig t-shirt though, wore that t-shirt for years with i bought more of them
mabus

Since when was Nosferatu a solo album??

My copy is by Hugh Cornwell & Robert Williams!!

Robert Williams' input is pretty much a forgotten factor these days.

Maybe if RW was not on Nosferatu, it would sound more like Wolf Shocked
The Nosferatu

euroman is infinetely better, more melodies, keyboard stuff, it sounds less polished but maybe its to its advantage, which is gay coz ive lost my euroman cometh cd.
johnnyg1968

Nosferatu hands down i still listen to it now what a great album. Dont get me wrong Euroman is good but Nosferatu is superior in every way
theraven1979

There both great albums and both far apart as you could get em - Today I would say I prefer Nosferatu rather than Eurohomme but that's only bacause I prefer Hugh's voice and subject matter.

That said it was a bold move for a bass guitarist to have a stab at a solo effort and it's pretty cool

Jim
PaulinLondon

Euroman works and wins it for me only because there is an angst there that really clicks for me everytime I play this album.

Crucial ingredients :

Euroman

Bottle of red.

Headphones.

Armchair.

Very Happy

You forgot the take-away Curry.
LAFOLIE

For me its Euroman. Seem to relate more to this album.
Pawsher

suchi

for me too, more to get ya teeth into Rolling Eyes Wired, Nosferatu, and Losers mi favourites

Euroman has some great moments too but spoiled by some ludicrous ones like Crabs Confused Overall sounds dated now but prolly ready on the wheel to be in vogue again.

Freddie, Eurospeed, Do The European and Jellyfish the highlights for me.

Surely JJ is more than just a bass guitarist Question Rolling Eyes TSK Exclamation
wadey1

nosferatu by a mile. much more musically interesting and accomplished. a lot of euroman is hard to listen to, very little melody. my fave from that lp is pretty face.
nosferatu is a dark gothic classic way ahead of the game. hoagys in leeds has it on their juke box (internet one). i put on caterpillar the oth er day, shoulda seen their faces. ha ha

Technically Hugh is winning - you have to discount the 5-10 posts by the females on here who are just wet for JJ and not the actualy record. Laughing

What about the 5-10 posts that you and other members of the "Cornwell Camp" made, who are just wet for Hugh and not the actual record? Surely that evens things up again
theraven1979

Only you're wet for Hugh Spooner.

Do you live on Spooner St? Is Peter Griffin your neighbour?

Oooh here we go again with this Cornwell Camp, Pro Hugh bollocks...

If I preffered Euroman to Nosferatu (which I don't) I would vote for Euroman.

I'd be quite insulted actually if one were to just vote for an album just for the sake of it. That's fucking stupid.

Adam

Although people know me as being more into JJ's solo work (Un Jour Parfait, the japanese manga songs) in this case I have to say Nosferatu which is without any doubt the best Hugh ever did solo (or with mr Williams in this case).

Why do people refer to'Nosferatu' by Hugh Cornwell & Robert Williams as a Hugh solo album and not 'Fire & Water' by JJ Burnel & Dave Greenfield as a JJ solo album?

Ain't it strange Question

Chillout Adam, I was only having a dig at 'THE TONGUEINCHEEKWINDUPMERCHANT' Exclamation
theraven1979

Not really - When you're in a band any activity outside that band by one of their members is classed as a solo effort. Why do you have a problem with this concept?

So CCW is another solo effort is it?

Is it fuck!

Dead Men Walking are touring in the near future for example. Capt Sensible is a member of the group but in no way, shape or form would this band be classed as a Captain Sensible solo project...or a Mike Peters or Kirk Brandon one for that matter...just because they're not with their regular bands.

Which part of that concept don't YOU understand?

Ya pudding head! Razz
theraven1979

Nope - he left the Stranglers by then

Might be best to start with some Janet & John books Barry

I heard that he'd started to write with Roger Cook before he left the Stranglers. Is there any truth in this, I wonder?
theraven1979

Yeah I heard there was a bit of moonlighting going on.

However!! There was songs already written for the follow up to 10 - I asked him what they were in a forums Q&A - I think a few of them appeared on Footprints. He was a busy chap around then that's for sure!

Hate to admit it but Nosferatu for me. Shocked Very Happy

Mainly because it has two classic tracks in 'White Room' and 'Puppets' whch along with BHBEBS are my fave Hugh tunes.

Euroman is still a fan album though. Cool

why are so many people anti hugh around here? i really dunno why. hes a great song writer, good bloke, terrific live performer, interesting, always coming up with brilliant songs and slants on oldies. the guy needs more respect i think. any way, nosferatu is a brilliant dark masterpiece. the music is so clever, it certainly influenced the raven and mib albums for sure.hate to say it, but most of euroman is crap tuneless drivel i believe. i mean what the fuck is crabs? and jelly fish? an assault on the ears... hugh is a genius. so under rated. his mere presence is electric.

I quite like Crabs & Jellyfish plus Pretty Face and Freddie Laker. The rest is rubbish though. Same with Nosferatu. White Room, Wired, Mothra and Irate Catepillar are good, but the rest does nothing for me.

The Nosferatu

you fudging tell 'em wadey !

how can you not like the bassline to euromess, paulinlondon ? its class.

i find euroman a lot more accessible than nosferatu, i always go to put on nosferatu then think "nah" at the last minute, id rather listen to euroman cometh.
PaulinLondon

"Euroman" - well I can listen to it from beginning to end with highlights in between.

With this JJ offering, you sometimes need to think about what he might have been musing over in his mind at that time otherwise it probably doesn't work.

I really like it. Takes me back and there is an underlying Europaranoia thing going on which makes for good listening.
