BackstageIs it true that Hugh stink-bombed the Ramones dressing room backstage when the Stranglers opened up for them on their London tour? I've heard numerous variations of the story.

Yeah I heard that story too. Whatever happened I think it was in high spirits cos I got the impression both bands respected each other

I thought the story went that after the Stranglers had finished performing, Hugh promptly dropped a stink bomb onstage before the band left so that when the Ramones came out, they were greeted by a less than pleasant smell.

Looks like Hugh certainly dropped something before they started "playing" NMH on TOTP - see "The Old Testament". For the first few bars of the song a clearly disgusted JJ is desparately trying to clear the air immediately behind Hugh using a newspaper(?) as a fan
Was it Hugh?

Is that Yorkshire slang? "I'm off up to me bedroom to bat off the dry ice".

Dry ice? Nah Jim, "fartpants" Cornwell lived on a diet of Guiness, nuts and beans back in those days... Creating an unpleasant atmosphere in the studio is the real reason they got banned from the Beeb - not the Guildford Uni incident!

So the stink bomb in the Ramones dressing room was true, Jim? How exactly did the story go?
