Ok.
Also, I'm pretty sure they played Tic Toc Coventry the night before Colston Hall at the start of the In The Night Tour...I'll check I have a listing somewhere.
theraven1979

Thanks I`m sure there`s a flyer somewhere in the gallery? More difficult to track dates from the early 90s than any others due to no SIS site at the time and no bugger keeping a record really.

Er....SIS published a Mk2 gig listing in Strangled (probably in about 94 or 95. Find the relevant issue and bobs your uncle. My copies are in the loft before you ask.

re: 1978
The Paris show for 12 May should I believe be on 12June at Le Bataclan ( I cam across some photo archive of Hugh there on this date). I am told Le Stadium is a promotions company and not an actual venue.
On 13.6 78 the boys played at L'Ancienne Belgique in Brussells - this would tie in with the German dates shortly afterwards

re 1979 came across a flyer for Le Paradiso Amsterdam on 10 November 1979
ThruBeingCool

Purple Helmets - London Astoria - 29th April 1988.

Also played the John McCarthey benefit @ The Hippodrome that year. I can't remember the exact date though. Sometime in Oct or Nov methinks.
theraven1979

Didn't the McCarthy gig get cancelled?

Cheers man

1977

Belfast - correct date 9/11/77. However, this gig never happened as it was BANNED at very short notice by the local council, who withdrew insurance cover.

Coleraine - correct date 10/11/77

(the press ads were published in the music papers before these dates were changed to the above)

1978

August Belfast - incorrect, definitely no gig in Belfast that month.

Portrush 8/9/78 - The Undertones support
billinlack

The Dictators also played support @ Bristol Ex Centre 22/10/77 - my first gig...

Stranglers and AC/DC

Hi

I am trying to find out where & when AC/DC & the Stranglers played on the same bill besides the Wembley Who gig in 79. From my archives I have the Stranglers supporting AC/DC in Swansea on 28 Oct 76 [Taken from a Sounds ad or listing I think]. But apparently AC/DC also Supported The Stranglers in 76 or 77, as a replacement for a support act that couldn't make it. Any idea??? Would probably have been between May and Sept 76. Any info appreciated Thanks!

Another Gig List

Jim,
Haven't had time to really scrutinise this yet, but might be useful to cross-reference with your gig list.

According to Punk Diary 1970-1982 -

Johnny Sox - Brecknock in London 12-01-74.

Listed The Newlands gig under 17-01-74 with accompanying ad and states 'Last Saturday they played the Brecknock...'

Also can confirm that, if interested, the support act for Belfast 07-09-78 was Rain.

Ain`t bought that yet but I have my eye on it looks good. Cheers

I've always had a problem about the listing for the Falkirk gig in 1977.
I have a limited tape of what is supposed to be this gig (only a few tracks exist), however I have a mate who was @ this gig & it was definitley 1978, not '77.
The tape I have quotes the gig as August 1977. Jim's gig listing is 13th Feb. 1977.
Said mate recalled that the gig was advertised for Maniqui's (behind the Bus Station) as The Skids + support, but it turned out to be a 'secret' Stranglers gig with The Skids on 1st & Stranglers on last.
This would tie in with the dates played in May 1978 on the Black & White tour (Friday 26th & Sunday 28th) @ the Glasgow Apollo where The Skids were the Support Act.
Whilst I have no confirmed date for this gig, I'd reason that it's a fair bet that it would have been on the Saturday (27th May), between the two Apollo gigs.
Jim's gig listing has this date as Clouds Disco, Edinburgh.
This date is not correct. The Clouds gig was a 'secret' gig in January 1978. I have an NME cutting from Jan. 1978 which proves this, also local DJ Billy Sloan recalls in an article that it was in the depths of Winter & hundreds of fans locked outside of the venue. I've a review of the Clouds gig somewhere in the vaults.

Hope this helps.
That's finally off my chest after a number of years.

Steveareno.

Thanks for that Steve - I will make the relevant changes shortly. Anyone else anything to add - if you ain't checked the pages for a month or so you might wanna have another look as I've been adding bits and bobs behind the scenes

The band's 1st Scottish gig was @ Strathclyde University in Glasgow in December 1976 (don't know exactly which date, but if Edinburgh was the 13th, Glasgow was probably the 12th).
The Union had booked Ian Gillan's band, however they pulled out @ the last minute & 'The Stranglers' were booked as their replacement.
The hippies didn't care much for our boys, especially as they were expecting Gillan. The band ended up baricading themselves in the dressing room whilst angry punters tried to beat a way in.
Whenever I walk past the Uni. Union (I was once a student there), I always try & imagine the old ice cream van outside.
The venue is up on the 6th Floor, so the boys would have had their work cut out hiking the kit up the stairs - what with Jet & his bad back !

Steveareno.

Thanks Steve - I'll slot that lot in

The Purple Helmets DID play The Astoria though around the same time.I went and still have the ticket, will have to dig it out. (A Friday night April '88 ) Pretty sure the original information was taken from my ticket stub!

The John McCarthy benefit gig featuring the Purple Helmets still doesn't feature in the 1988 section.

London Hippodrome - October or November '88 methinks.

Bear Cage

I was thrown out of that gig before they came on stage for lifting the curtain. My mate came out of the -exit to let me back in, and when we got back there someone had kindly closed it. We managed to rip the door down and got in just as they came on stage.
JJ jumped into the audience during the gig to sort out one of the bouncers.
And I ended up in a scrap with the bouncer who threw me out when I passed him on the way out at the end of the gig, he took exception to the fact I'd got back in and me laughing at him.

NEW Gig 21 MARCH 1977

Just realised Ihave a GRIP poster advertising a gig at the TOP OF THE WORLD form Monday 21 March (I assume 1977). The price was £1 and this is scribbled out and reduced to 80p. Tickets from student union.

Also a colleague has confided in me tha they were at the infamous Guildford Uni / TV gig but didn't want to say as they knew I'd grill them about iot and they weren't really concentrating (they preferred the support band.......)
